Josh Gumiela
Department Chair, Associate Professor
Josh Gumiela is an electronic media artist combining low and high technology to create interactive media installations, hybrid instruments & tools, and multi-media performances. He’s interested in themes of post-memory, diaspora, and displacement as well as matters of time and timelessness, privacy, maker culture, and the repurposing of archaic & discarded technology. He has extensive experience teaching digital media courses, ranging from audio post-production to physical computing to web design.
Josh is also a sound designer with over 25 film score & sound design credits, many of which have won awards such as Jury Citation at the Black Maria Film Festival. His sound and radio art has been exhibited in national and international venues, such as the Future Places Festival in Porto, Portugal and the Santa Fe International Festival of Electroacoustic Music. He has also installed his work at festivals such as Slingshot in Athens, GA, and Circuit Benders’ Ball in Nashville, TN.

Dave Ryan
Associate Professor
Dave Ryan is an assistant professor of digital media arts in Hamline University’s College of Liberal Arts. He has an extensive background in teaching and in making digital media as art. He has received grants from prestigious organizations such as the McKnight Foundation, Bush Foundation and MacDowell Art Colony. His work has been featured at numerous exhibitions including “The American Century” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New York Video Festival at the Lincoln Center in New York City and the Locarno Video Art Festival in Switzerland. Ryan holds a BA in communications and theatre arts from Taylor University and an MFA in film from Ohio University.
TEACHING STYLE
Students taking a class with Professor Ryan will learn to create art with digital media through hands-on training, creative exercises, and study of conceptual foundations.

CURT LUND
Assistant Professor
Curt Lund (M.F.A. and Ph.D., University of Minnesota) is an educator, designer, curator, writer-performer, and multimedia artist — all reflections of his passions for connecting words, images, and objects in nerdy and satisfying ways.
As Assistant Professor of Digital Media Arts at Hamline University, Curt teaches a wide variety of graphic design and digital arts courses with an enthusiasm for storytelling in all forms, from history and literature to politics and pop culture. Research areas include graphic design history, material culture, museum studies, and LGBTQ+ representation in media.
Curt’s professional experience includes tenures as marketing and design manager at Minnesota Center for Book Arts; tour guide / museum educator at the Walker Art Center; guest curator for the Goldstein Museum of Design and Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts; contract web designer for the State of Minnesota; and environmental graphic designer for a variety of national retail clients.
Curt’s artwork has been featured in juried exhibitions across the U.S., and he has served as juror for numerous festivals and art fairs. Locally, venues include the Minnesota Museum of American Art (upcoming), the Minneapolis Central Library, Plains Arts Museum, Minnetonka Center for the Arts, University of Minnesota’s Larson Art Gallery and Coffman Memorial Union, and the Twin Cities Pride Festival.
As a writer-storyteller, Curt has shared his work on stages, pages, and airwaves including Minnesota Public Radio, McSweeney’s, the Minnesota Book Awards, CBC Radio Canada, the Minneapolis Geek Slam, Story Arts MN’s Tellabration!, Walker Art Center Open Field, CONvergence, Pride festivals in three states, and five feature-length spoken word storytelling productions (three of which were awarded Minnesota Fringe Festival “Encore” status).

Steve Stenzel
Professor
Steve Stenzel is a photographer/professor based out of the Twin Cities. He has taught over 90 college courses between 6 different colleges and universities over the last 16 years.
Stenzel’s work has been shown in galleries internationally and his work is in numerous public and private collections. Within the last year, his work was exhibited in juried exhibitions at the Living Gallery in New York City, at the PhotoPlace Gallery in Vermont, at the Photographic Center Northwest’s “Chase the Light” exhibition in Seattle, at the “International Exhibition 2020” at The Glasgow Gallery of Photography, and locally at the Praxis Gallery and Photo Center in the “Making Strange” exhibition. Stenzel’s work also won “The Director’s Award” last year in an online exhibition through The In Art Gallery.
He was commissioned by the New York Times Magazine to shoot a cover story, and since has completed 4 more projects for the Times. He currently teaches in the Digital Media Arts program at Hamline University and in the Communications Department at North Central University while pursuing his personal work.
